‘We need to bring him home’: Sen. Chris Van Hollen speaks after returning from visit El Salvador

Senator Chris Van Hollen’s recent trip to El Salvador has thrust the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia into the national spotlight, raising questions about immigration policy, diplomatic accountability, and justice. Speaking at Washington Dulles Airport on April 19, 2025, after returning from the visit, the Maryland Democrat demanded action to secure Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States, declaring, “We need to bring him home.” The case, marked by a controversial deportation and subsequent imprisonment, has sparked heated debate, with critics alleging Van Hollen is defending a gang-affiliated criminal, while supporters argue he is fighting a grave injustice.

Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, was deported to El Salvador in 2023 and detained in the notorious CECOT prison, despite the Trump administration later admitting the deportation was erroneous. Court orders have since mandated the federal government to facilitate his return, but Van Hollen claims both the U.S. and Salvadoran governments have stalled. During his visit, Van Hollen was denied access to CECOT but met with Salvadoran Vice President Félix Ulloa, who reportedly stated that the decision rests with U.S. authorities. Van Hollen has since accused the Trump administration of defying judicial mandates and called on El Salvador to release Abrego Garcia, who faces no charges in either country.

The senator’s trip has drawn sharp criticism, particularly from conservative voices. Posts on X allege Van Hollen is advocating for an MS-13 gang member, citing unverified claims of domestic violence and criminal ties. These accusations, amplified by figures like Bill Melugin, paint the visit as a misguided attempt to prioritize a dangerous individual over public safety. Van Hollen’s supporters counter that these claims are baseless, emphasizing Abrego Garcia’s clean record and the government’s own admission of error. They argue the case exposes systemic flaws in deportation processes and the need for accountability.

The controversy highlights broader tensions over immigration and U.S.-El Salvador relations. El Salvador’s stringent anti-gang policies under President Nayib Bukele have led to mass incarcerations, often without due process, complicating diplomatic efforts. Van Hollen, alongside Senator Tim Kaine, is pushing legislation to pressure both nations to act, including potential sanctions. Critics argue this risks escalating tensions with a key ally, while supporters see it as a necessary stand for human rights.

Public reaction remains polarized. In Maryland, where Abrego Garcia’s family resides, local advocates have rallied behind Van Hollen’s efforts, framing the case as a test of justice. Nationally, however, immigration hardliners view the senator’s actions as emblematic of lax border policies. As Van Hollen continues to press for Abrego Garcia’s return, the case underscores the challenges of navigating immigration policy in a divided political landscape. Whether his efforts will succeed remains uncertain, but the senator’s resolve has ensured the issue will not fade quietly.
