“There are many opinions that we should cooperate closely with China to solve the crisis together, but I do not support that. We must protect open democracy. At the same time, we must find ways to cooperate against climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. And that is not easy,” billionaire George Soros shared with the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper.
The 90-year-old billionaire also said that President Donald Trump’s repeated blaming of China for the origin of the pandemic has complicated joint efforts to contain the disease. However, Mr. Soros himself does not support the US having an overly close relationship with Beijing.
Throughout the pandemic crisis, China has been criticized for its lack of transparency and poor handling of the outbreak even before it began. Beijing has denied any wrongdoing, with Vice Premier Le Yucheng telling NBC in April that the country had not hidden or delayed any efforts.
Mr. Soros also criticized President Donald Trump’s leadership style as leaning towards dictatorship but being hindered by the US Constitution. He said that President Trump does not represent the values of an open and free society.
