Former US President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump at an event in Washington on January 9.
Newsweek magazine reported on April 8 that the Overton Insights survey was conducted from March 24-28 with the participation of 1,103 voters with a margin of error of plus/minus 2.7%. Voters were asked to vote for president between two candidates, Mr. Trump and Mr. Obama, under the hypothetical condition that the US amended the Constitution to allow presidents to run for a third term .
The results showed that 53% of participants chose former President Barack Obama and 47% chose President Donald Trump .
The White House and Obama’s side have not commented on the above information.
Any amendment to the Constitution to change term limits would require a two-thirds majority in both houses of the U.S. Congress, followed by ratification by at least 38 of the 50 states.
Because it requires strong bipartisan support, the US Constitution has been amended only 27 times since its creation in 1787. The most recent amendment, ratified in 1992, prevents members of Congress from giving themselves raises.
On March 31, when asked about the possibility of running against former President Obama in 2028, Mr. Trump replied that he would like to have this opportunity.
In January, Republican Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee introduced a resolution that would pave the way for President Trump to run for a third term. The draft called for amending the 22nd Amendment to “provide that no person shall be elected president more than three times, or serve more than two consecutive terms.”
Senator Ogles’ amendment is intended to prevent two-term presidents like Obama and George W. Bush from running for the White House for a third time.
