The mystery behind the ‘very effective phone call’ between President Trump and General Secretary To Lam

On the evening of April 4, Ambassador Hoang Anh Tuan, Consul General of Vietnam in San Francisco (USA), posted on his personal Facebook page about President Donald Trump’s comments on social media about the recent phone call between General Secretary To Lam and President Donald Trump.

President Donald Trump shared on social network Truth Social about his “very productive phone call” with General Secretary To Lam.

Accordingly, on the social network Truth Social, President Trump wrote: “I just had a very productive phone call with Mr. To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Mr. To Lam told me that Vietnam wants to reduce tariffs to zero if they can reach an agreement with the United States. I thanked him on behalf of our country, and said I look forward to a meeting in the near future.”

The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also just informed about the phone call between General Secretary To Lam and US President Donald J. Trump about Vietnam – US relations on the evening of April 4.

During the phone call, General Secretary To Lam highly appreciated the exchange, in which the two leaders affirmed their desire to continue strengthening bilateral cooperation for the benefit of both countries and contributing to peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

The two leaders assessed that the bilateral relationship is developing well in all fields. Regarding bilateral trade relations, the two leaders discussed measures to continue promoting trade, in which General Secretary To Lam affirmed that Vietnam is ready to discuss with the US to reduce import tax to 0% for goods imported from the US, and at the same time proposed that the US apply the same tax rate to goods imported from Vietnam, continue to import more goods from the US that Vietnam needs and encourage and create favorable conditions for companies from the US to further increase investment in Vietnam.

The two leaders affirmed that they will discuss to soon sign a bilateral agreement between the two countries to concretize the above commitments.

On this occasion, General Secretary To Lam respectfully invited President Donald J. Trump and his wife to soon visit Vietnam again.

President Donald J. Trump happily accepted the invitation and expressed his wish to meet General Secretary To Lam again soon. President Donald J. Trump respectfully asked General Secretary To Lam to convey his warm regards to the leaders and people of Vietnam.
