The US Space Force announced on April 10 that Colonel Susannah Meyers, commander of the US Pituffik space base in Greenland , had been removed from her position due to a loss of confidence from her superiors in her leadership abilities.

Ms Meyers was fired after US Vice President JD Vance visited the base in March amid back-and-forth over US control of Greenland .

During a visit to the base on March 28, Vice President Vance criticized Denmark for not investing enough in Greenland’s people and security, according to AFP.
Military.com reported that Ms. Meyers sent a letter to all military personnel at Pituffik on March 31 calling for solidarity, including with Canadians, Danes and Greenlanders working at the base, following Mr. Vance’s visit.
“I don’t claim to understand the current political situation, but what I do know is that the U.S. administration’s concerns discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday do not reflect the views of Pituffik Space Base,” Meyers wrote in the letter, according to Military.com .

In a statement on April 10, the US Space Force wrote that “commanders must adhere to the highest standards of conduct, particularly regarding maintaining nonpartisanship in the performance of their duties.”
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell wrote on social media X that actions that undermine the chain of command or undermine President Donald Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense , according to AFP.
The US military also announced that Colonel Shawn Lee has taken over as base commander from Ms. Meyers, who was appointed in July 2024.
