In a surprising and almost incredible turn within the Formula 1 world, it appears that Christian Horner, the team boss of Red Bull Racing, has encouraged his star driver Max Verstappen to leave the team at the end of the season. What is even more remarkable: Horner would have advised Max to join Alpine F1 in 2026, the wrestling French team that hopes to return to the top.

According to sources close to the team, the relationship between Horner and Verstappen has come under tension since the beginning of this season. Internal political games, disagreements about technical choices and the future of Red Bull after the departure of top designer Adrian Newey, would be at the basis of this striking development.
During a private conversation – the content of which has since leaked outside – Horner would have said to Verstappen:
“Maybe it’s time for a new challenge. Alpine is looking for a leader. You could become a legend there.”
For many, the suggestion of Horner came as a shock, given his many years of support to Max. But Verstappen’s response to the proposal was even more surprising and caused divided reactions among his fans:
“I don’t exclude anything. Formula 1 changes quickly. But I let my heart and my sense of speed decide, not politics.”
That statement has provided speculation: is Max actually considering leaving Red Bull? And why would Alpine – currently a team from the middle bracket – be attractive enough for a triple world champion?
What insiders say is that Alpine is working behind the scenes on a grand project for the new motorcycle regulations from 2026. They would like to give Verstappen a key role in both the development of the car and the formation of the team. In addition, it is known that Alpine is working on a considerable salary offer that could even surpass from Red Bull.
Mixed feelings prevail among fans. Some are concerned that Max gives up his dominant position at Red Bull for an uncertain adventure. Others admire his guts and hope that he can connect his name to a complete reconstruction of a historical team.
Red Bull itself has not yet given an official commentary on the story. It is unclear whether Horner spoke from personal frustration, or whether there are strategic motives behind it. What is clear: the future of Max Verstappen is again on loose screws, and nothing seems excluded.
The Formula 1 paddock awaits in voltage.
