Former US President Donald Trump on February 16 harshly criticized Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate.
According to the New York Times, in a statement of about 600 words, Mr. Trump called Mr. McConnell a “sad, sad, self-serving” politician, and affirmed that the Republican Party would continue to suffer many failures in the future if the Kentucky Senator remained in power.
“If the Republican Senators still support him (McConell), they will never win again,” Mr. Trump asserted.

The statement came about three days after the Senate acquitted Trump in his second impeachment trial. Senator Mitch McConnell, who also voted to acquit Trump, said the former president must be “morally and ethically accountable” for inciting the January 6 riot.
A person close to Donald Trump told the New York Times that in the first version of the statement, Trump had even harsher criticism of the Republican leader in the Senate than what had been made public.
In this statement, Mr. Trump said that Mr. McConnell’s political incompetence caused the Republican Party to lose its majority in the Senate.
“The Democrats and Chuck Schumer treat McConnell like a joke. They’ve never had it this good, and they want to keep it that way,” Trump said. “We know our America First agenda is the winner, not McConnell’s Beltway One or America Last agenda.”
The statement also said the 78-year-old senator has no credibility with China and has done nothing to address Beijing’s growing economic and military threats, citing the fact that McConnell’s family and his wife, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, have significant business interests in China.
“He will never do what needs to be done or what is right for our country,” Trump stressed in a statement. “When necessary and appropriate, I will support his primary opponents who espouse Making America Great Again and our America First policies.”
Senator Mitch McConnell has yet to respond to the statement, but some longtime supporters of McConnell say it was just a “provocation” by former President Trump.
