White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that US President Donald Trump was ready to cooperate if China truly intended to achieve a tariff deal with the United States.

“President Trump clearly said that he was ready for an agreement with China,” said Leavitt, and said Mr. Trump “optimistic” that the two sides could reach an agreement.
“The president will be ready to cooperate if China really intends to reach an agreement with the US. If China continues to retaliate, it will not be beneficial for China. The US is the strongest, best economy in the world, this is shown by more than 75 countries immediately called us to discuss beneficial agreements,” Leavitt added.

Ms. Leavitt noted that President Trump “wanted to do the right thing for the American people”.
“He wants to see fair trade practices globally – it is the goal and orientation of the president” – the White House press secretary continues.
When asked if President Trump was waiting for China to be proactive first, Leavitt replied, “I will not comment on the exchange or may be happening.”
Leavitt added that “US national security team” can “start these discussions” and she will continue to update information in the near future.
Ms. Leavitt also informed that the United States “has achieved very good progress” with a country (without name) regarding a recent recent reciprocal tax agreement.
“I will not reveal or go ahead of our trade negotiation team, because the negotiations are still going on,” Leavitt added.
China has not commented on Leavitt’s statement.
Leavitt made a statement just hours after China increased the import tax on US goods to 125%, from 84% before.
China’s move in response to President Trump on April 9 announced the postponement of the application of reciprocal taxes higher than 10% for most of the goods imported from dozens of countries within 90 days. Particularly China, US leader raised reciprocal taxes 125%.
Later, the White House said that the tax on China is currently 145%, including 125% of the reciprocal tax and 20% of the previous imposed tax.
