Mr. Trump: America will be fine in the long term
Mr. Trump reassured economic concerns, saying everything would be good in the long term even when the US economy undergo a short -term recession.
On the programMeet the PressNBC News on May 2, when asked whether the US would be good if the recession occurred in the short term, US President Donald Trump confirmed “everything is fine”.
“As I said, this is the transition period. I think we will become great,” he said.
When the host Kristen Welker asked Mr. Trump whether he was worried about the recession, the US President answered “no”. Mr. Trump did not rule out the possibility of a recession, saying “anything can happen, but I think we will have the greatest economy in the history of the country”.
The comment was made by Mr. Trump when the analysts in Wall Street were increasingly concerned that the country could face a recession due to the continuous change of the government.
“He talked about some people on Wall Street, but I wanted to talk about others in Wall Street, saying that we would have the greatest economy in history. Why don’t you mention them?”, President Trump told the Welker host in an interview in the Mar-A-Lago resort in Florida.
“There are many people on Wall Street saying that this will be the biggest unexpected profit that has ever seen,” the President added.
The US Department of Commerce on April 30 said that the US GDP decreased by 0.3% in the first quarter of 2025, mainly due to the decrease in exports and imports increased before the new tariffs that Mr. Trump announced. During the cabinet meeting on the same day, Mr. Trump rejected the responsibility for GDP to decrease, saying that it was the result of the economy that former US President Joe Biden left.
On April 2, Mr. Trump announced a new tariff with about 180 US trading partners. In addition to the 10%general tax rate, he announced that he would impose a higher reciprocal tax rate with about 60 major US trading partners from April 9.
However, right after the reciprocal tax took about half a day, the US president suddenly announced the postponement of implementation with a series of partners in 90 days, except for China. The decision was made by Mr. Trump after the US stock market plummeted and the large sale of US bonds made many investors bewildered.
Trump has repeatedly denied concerns about the tariff plan, including the 145% tax that the US currently applies to Chinese goods. He said that this tax policy will bring long -term benefits and help the United States “great”.
