Legendary Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić will leave the Spanish giants after the Club World Cup. The Croatian has spent 13 years with Los Blancos, helping the club win an incredible 28 trophies. And it seems he’s not planning to end his career in an exotic league just yet.
As soon as news broke that the 39-year-old would be leaving Madrid as a free agent, transfer rumours began to swirl. Some reports linked him with Inter Miami, while others pointed to AC Milan
According to the latest update from Fabrizio Romano, Modrić has agreed to a move to Italy, with Milan offering him a one-year contract with an option for a second season.
While neither AC Milan nor Modrić have officially confirmed the rumors, the Spanish press has identified three key reasons why Luka might choose to join the Rossoneri.
First, Modrić’s childhood idol was Croatian midfielder Zvonimir Boban, who played for the red-and-black side throughout the 1990s.
Archived photos of Modrić wearing a Rossoneri shirt have even started surfacing online.
Beyond childhood admiration, Boban later became a friend to the adult Luka. This emotional connection likely influenced his decision regarding the potential transfer.
Secondly, the Croatian is interested in Milan to fully prepare his form for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. The level of Serie A is much higher than the leagues in the USA or Saudi Arabia, and Luka is also aiming to take a leading role in Rossoneri’s midfield.
Thirdly, the fact that the Italian giant will miss out on European competitions for the first time in five years might also work in his favor. Marca emphasized that this is actually a positive factor for Modrić, as he wouldn’t want to play against Real Madrid
