The recent approval of a new redistricting map by the Texas House has sparked intense debate, particularly over its impact on Representative Jasmine Crockett’s congressional seat. The map, which awaits Texas Senate approval, is poised to reshape the state’s political landscape by adding five Republican-leaning districts while eliminating five Democratic ones, including Crockett’s Dallas-based 30th Congressional District. This move, driven by Texas Republicans, has been criticized as a partisan effort to bolster GOP control in the U.S. House, with Crockett’s district becoming a focal point of contention.
Crockett, a first-term Democrat known for her outspoken criticism of Republican policies, has accused the legislature of deliberately drawing her home out of her current district. She claims the process began with a request to verify her address, only for the new map to place her residence in the neighboring 33rd District, currently represented by Rep. Marc Veasey. This redistricting plan, which Crockett labels a “power grab,” could force her to run in a different district or face a primary challenge against another Democratic incumbent. The proposed map also reduces minority-majority districts, prompting Crockett and others to argue it dilutes the voting power of Black and Hispanic communities.
The redistricting effort stems from a broader push, with Texas Governor Greg Abbott responding to calls from the Department of Justice to address alleged “race-based gerrymandering” in prior maps. However, Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have condemned the new plan as a Trump-driven initiative to entrench Republican dominance. Texas House Democrats even fled the state to break quorum and delay the vote, though the Senate moved forward with a 19-2 approval on August 12, 2025. The map’s passage in the House seems imminent as quorum issues resolve.
Crockett, undeterred, is weighing her options. She could run in the redrawn 33rd District, which would become Hispanic-majority but remain Democratic-leaning, or stay in the 30th, where most of her current constituents reside. Federal rules don’t require her to live in her district, but Crockett has expressed a desire to consult her constituents and colleagues before deciding. Meanwhile, other Democratic representatives, like Lloyd Doggett and Julie Johnson, face similar dilemmas as their districts undergo significant changes.
