In a story like a thriller, a professional diver accidentally discovered the answer to a 75 -year -old mystery when a body from the wreck of a sunken aircraft “packed” him on the sea floor. The shocking discovery not only put the diver into a state of shock, but also brought light in a case unresolved in a decades.
The incident occurred during a dive in a remote lake known for its aircraft wrecks from the Second World War. The diver named Daniel Krause was just exploring the fuselage of a hip B-17 bombers when he felt one, as he described it, “strange, icy touch” on his arm.
“At first I thought it was a current or a piece of debris, but then I saw a human hand that held me. It was as if the past was screaming for help”,Krause told in a later interview.
The B-17 bomber, known as the “flying fortress”, disappeared in 1948 during a exercise. The machine was never found and the crew members were officially reported as missing. At that time, the authorities could not clarify the cause of the crash, so that the families of the crew members had more questions than answers.
Krauses discovery showed that one of the corpses that had been perfectly preserved by the cold water was trapped in the fuselage. According to experts, the location of the body indicates that the victim may have tried to flee before it was trapped.
After the find, the local authorities and diving experts initiated a rescue operation together with aviation and diving experts. It turned out that the remains belonged to one of the missing crew members. The identification was based on the military brand that was still attached to its uniform.
Although the discovery answers the question of what happened to the plane, the investigators are now trying to find out what caused the crash. Was it a technical defect, extreme weather conditions or a human failure?
For the families of the crew members, this discovery marks the conclusion of a painful chapter. A descendant of the crew, Mary Johnson, said moved:
“I never thought that we would have answers after so many years. It is a relief to know that we can finally honor your souvenir.”
The case has attracted the attention of historians, aviation enthusiasts and the general public and is reminiscent of the continuing effects of war and unsolved. While the efforts to rescue the aircraft and its possible other remains continue, the world is fascinated by how history comes to light bit by bit from the depths of forgetting.
