The father of the four times world champion Max Verstappen, Jos Verstappen, describes as unfair a recent change of rules by the FIA for the great prize of Spain.
The Verstappen Formula 1 team has been impressed by the McLaren speed at the beginning of the 2025 season and there is currently 176 points behind the Papaya team in the Construction Championship.
Despite this, the Dutchman can still compete well in the pilot championship, having won two of the first eight races. Now it is only 25 points from the championship leader, Oscar Piastri, before the weekend of the GP of Spain.
On the eve of this weekend’s career, Verstappen’s father, Jos, has talked about a change in the rules of the FIA. As a result, McLaren will adapt the design of your car to accommodate the most strict front wing measures that will be introduced from the GP of Spain.
Verstappen, who competed in Formula 1 intermittently between 1994 and 2003, now wonders why this rule was not introduced at the beginning of the season. According to him, more egalitarian conditions could have been created in 2025.
“They want to have an exciting season and not someone who wins 20 races to become monotonous,” said De Limburger, referring to his son’s previous domain in the championship with Red Bull in 2023.
“But I think there should be equal conditions,” Verstappen continued.
As with those flexible front wingers, which will be prohibited in Spain from next week. Some teams have benefited from them for too long, which does not seem fair.
The Chief of the Ferrari team, Fred Vasseur, has already suggested that the new FIA rule could be a “game change” for the 2025 season.
His iconic Formula 1 team has started the season even worse than Red Bull and still does not seem able to fight for victory.
Although the French does not believe that the rules change the direction of the championship, Vasseur did suggest that they will make every weekend of the individual race more competitive, with a greater variety of teams, from Spain to Spain.
Verstappen’s questions about the time of rule change arrive at a time when his son could benefit more: he is 25 points from the Piestri leader and ready to fight for a fifth consecutive world championship that the record equals.
McLaren could have to monitor a little more above the shoulder in the next races if Verstappen’s belief that this change will create a fairer competitive position becomes a reality.
