According to Politico , the draft resolution was submitted by Congressman Tom Malinowski and could be voted on in the House of Representatives as early as July 16, US time.
Previously, according to the New York Times , Ms. Nancy Pelosi – Speaker of the House of Representatives – also pledged to bring a draft resolution condemning President Trump’s criticism of black congresswomen to Congress for discussion.
“He doesn’t know how to defend his policies, so he attacks us personally,” said Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the four congresswomen criticized by Mr. Trump, according to Politico .
According to this page, the draft resolution expresses the view of the US House of Representatives “strongly condemning President Donald Trump’s racist comments, which have legitimized and increased fear and hatred among new Americans and people of color.”
Mrs. Trump is silent.
In another development, CNN explored the reaction of Mrs. Melania Trump – the second first lady in US history who was not born here – after Mr. Trump launched a criticism against black female Democratic congresswomen who are immigrants. Accordingly, Mrs. Trump has remained silent so far.
On July 14, US President Donald Trump posted criticism on his Twitter account, implying that four Democratic congresswomen, Ilhan Omar (Minnesota), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York), Rashida Tlaib (Michigan) and Ayanna Pressley (Massachusetts), were not “natural” US citizens.
Not only that, Mr. Trump also accused them of hating America, and one of the first two Muslim congresswomen elected to the House of Representatives is a sympathizer of Al Qaeda.
However, according to the New York Times , Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib and Pressley are all natural-born citizens of the United States. Ms. Omar was born in Somalia and immigrated to the United States as a child. In 2000, at the age of 17, she became a US citizen.
The congresswomen spoke out last week about poor living conditions in immigration detention centers at the border.
This is also an issue that Mrs. Melania Trump has publicly expressed disagreement with her husband.
“I can’t stand seeing parents and children separated,” she said in an ABC News interview about four months after Mrs. Trump visited migrant detention facilities in Texas and Arizona in 2018. “It’s heartbreaking. I’m speaking out.”
Melania was born in Slovenia when it was part of the Yugoslav federation. In 1991, Slovenia declared its independence from the federation, around the same time Melania left her homeland to pursue a modeling career in Italy and France.
She eventually settled in New York City. In 1998 she met Mr. Trump and they married in 2005. A year later she was granted US citizenship.
Melania’s parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, also became US citizens under the “chain immigration” policy that Mr Trump has criticized.
Trump’s criticism of the four congresswomen has drawn criticism even from members of the Republican Party. Some have accused Trump of racism for “attacking” black congresswomen.
In a series of tweets on July 14 (US time) that were said to be aimed at criticizing four congresswomen serving their first terms, Mr. Trump said that they should return to their country of origin, full of corruption and disaster, to help fix it instead of teaching Americans how to run the country.
“So interesting to watch ‘radical’ Democrat congresswomen – who come from countries whose governments are a complete and utter disaster, the worst, most corrupt and incompetent in the world – loudly tell the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful nation on Earth, how to run their government,” Trump wrote.
“Why don’t they go back to their countries and help fix up their crime-ridden, totally broken places, and then come back and brag to us about it,” Mr. Trump urged. “These places need your help badly, and there can be no more delay.”
