David Letterman has a message for the many NFL fans who are upset about all the attention Taylor Swift is getting for attending Kansas City Chiefs games to support boyfriend Travis Kelce: “That’s so sweet. Shut up!” Hours before the Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game to secure a spot in Super Bowl LVIII, the former “Late Show” host took to social media to congratulate Swift and send his best wishes to her and Kelce.
“I don’t think in the history of show business or popular culture we’ve ever seen anything like this,” Letterman said of Swift. “It’s amazing! She sells out stadiums all over the world and does a three-hour show. We live in a world where all we hear is bullshit and ugliness. The bullshit can’t get any more absurd and the ugliness, God hopes it can’t get any uglier. But that’s all we hear. And now here’s Taylor Swift, who is a shining light of goodness in the world, and she starts dating [Travis Kelce].”
Letterman added a touch of humor to his message by mixing up Kelce’s name with that of fellow comedian Kelsey Grammer, but the message was strong nonetheless.
“Kelce’s people are like, ‘Oh, no, no, no, don’t bother us. We’re all caught up in football. We don’t want Taylor and football.’ And Taylor Swift’s people, the Swifties, are like, ‘Oh, we don’t want a football player in here with Kelce,’” Letterman said. “And I’m like, ‘That’s so beautiful. Shut up!’”
Letterman added: “It’s good for football players. It’s good for Taylor Swift and it’s a positive, joyous thing for the world. And politically, Taylor Swift is a huge force, and I think she just wants to see people do the right thing. So God bless Taylor Swift and [Kelce].”
Swift has attended several Chiefs games during the 2023-24 NFL season, garnering widespread media coverage. It seems like her every move at every game generates countless headlines, including during the AFC Championship, when she appeared on the field as the Chiefs celebrated their victory and hugged Kelce.
