In a shocking (but not entirely surprising) move, Elon Musk has weighed in on the issue of social media celebrities. The tech billionaire, known for his cryptic tweets and controversial opinions, has called for Taylor Swift and the Kardashians to be blocked and boycotted.
“They’re manipulating you!” Musk tweeted. “Don’t let them control your life!”
Of course, Musk didn’t stop there. He also proposed a social media “purge” in which all “inauthentic” followers would be removed. “We need to make social media great again!” Musk declared. The reaction on social media has been mixed. Some have praised Musk for “standing up for the truth,” while others have criticized him for making “insensitive” and “divisive” comments.
“Elon Musk should focus on building electric cars and rockets instead of meddling in issues he doesn’t understand,” one Twitter user wrote.
“I agree with Elon Musk,” another wrote. “It’s time to stand up to social media celebrities.”
It’s unclear at this point whether Musk’s call for a boycott will be followed. But it’s certainly sparked a heated debate on the issue
And in a related development, Musk also announced that he’s developing a new app that can help users identify who their “real” followers are and who their “fake” followers are. “It’s called ‘The Truth Detector,’” Musk tweeted. “And it’s coming tomorrow.”
