“I think it’s an undeniable violation of the law. The president is trying to attack our own election. He’s attacking our election,” New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said at the opening session of the 117th US Congress on January 3.
Although Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said she had not heard the full content of the recording of President Trump’s call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, she said Mr. Trump should be considered for impeachment for that action.
The comments came after the Washington Post on January 2 published a recording of a call between Mr. Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Raffensperger. During the call, Mr. Trump asked Georgia officials to “find” him 11,780 votes in the state. Mr. Trump also asserted that he “did not lose” to Democratic candidate Joe Biden in Georgia.
“The people of Georgia are angry, the people of the country are angry. So let’s reconsider. I just need to do that. I just want to find 11,780 votes, one more than we have. Because we won Georgia,” the Washington Post quoted Mr. Trump in the recording.
Responding to the recording, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said Trump’s actions could be impeachable. Georgia Democratic Representative Hank Johnson also criticized Trump’s actions as “violating state and federal law”. Meanwhile, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris said the recording showed Trump seemed “desperate”.
President Trump and his allies continue to pursue efforts to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. After lawsuits alleging election fraud and requests for recounts, Trump and his allies are planning to challenge the election results when Congress convenes on January 6.
