QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES – In a stunning display of generosity and compassion, rising Filipino tennis sensation Alexandra Eala has made headlines after donating a staggering ₱3.9 million to support homeless elderly people in Quezon City.
At just 19 years old, Eala—already considered one of Southeast Asia’s brightest tennis stars—is using her international platform not just for athletic glory, but to drive real social change at home. The donation, made through a partnership with local non-profit “Bahay Kalinga Para Sa Nakatatanda,” is set to fund shelter improvements, food programs, and medical assistance for elderly citizens living on the streets.
“I love my grandparents deeply. Seeing other elderly people left alone with nowhere to go—it absolutely breaks my heart,” Eala shared during an emotional press briefing on Tuesday afternoon.
The announcement was met with widespread praise on social media, with hashtags like #EalaCares and #ServeWithHeart trending on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. Filipinos from all walks of life have applauded the young athlete for stepping beyond the tennis court to serve a cause often overlooked.
Alexandra Eala, who became the first Filipina to win a Grand Slam junior title in 2022, has always used her fame with remarkable maturity. Known for her discipline, humility, and fierce competitiveness, she now adds “humanitarian” to her growing list of accomplishments.
“Alex is not just a champion in tennis—she’s a champion of the Filipino spirit,” said Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, who attended the donation ceremony and pledged to match the amount with additional city support.
Eala’s donation comes at a critical time. According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), over 3,000 senior citizens are believed to be living without stable shelter in Quezon City alone, many of whom suffer from chronic illnesses and lack access to basic health care.
By funding expansion projects for shelters and creating new community outreach initiatives, Eala’s contribution is expected to benefit hundreds of elderly individuals this year alone.
Eala’s move has already inspired other Filipino celebrities and athletes to speak out about elder care. Lifestyle vlogger and philanthropist Heart Evangelista reposted Eala’s quote on her Instagram story, writing, “This is how change begins—with heart.”
Fans are also calling on government agencies and private corporations to follow suit, urging more long-term investments in elderly welfare.
Before leaving the press conference, Eala left the room with a message that resonated deeply:
“I train every day to be better at tennis, but I believe we should also train our hearts to be kinder every day. That’s what really matters.”
As Eala prepares for her upcoming matches on the WTA circuit, Filipinos are not only cheering for her victories—but for her values.
