Chaos in the national team: Acerbi refuses the call, chain reactions to Inter – Spalletti in difficulty
Rome, June 2, 2025– A real earthquake shakes the Italian national team a few days after the start of the retreat to prepare the international commitments of June. Francesco Acerbi, an expert defender of Inter, has decided to voluntarily refuse the convocation of the coach Luciano Spalletti. His declaration, released through the official channels of the club, left everyone speechless:
“I don’t deserve this call. After what happened in the Champions League final, we feel humiliated. I don’t feel like representing Italy in these conditions.”

Acerbi’s words refer to Inter’s heavy defeat for 5-0 against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final just ended. A defeat that has left its mark, not only among the fans, but evidently also among the protagonists on the pitch.

But Acerbi’s gesture triggered a chain reaction. In the following hours, two other Nerazzurri – Nicolò Barella and Federico Dimarco – would have expressed the same malaise and would have asked for time to “reflect” before joining the blue retreat. Sources close to the locker room of Inter speak of an extremely tense emotional climate and players deeply shaken by the humiliation suffered in Munich.

The technical commissioner Luciano Spalletti said he was “surprised and embittered” for the choice of the defender and worried about the general situation. “I understand the difficult moment, but the duty towards the national team remains an honor and a responsibility. I hope these guys can find strength and pride to return to wearing the blue shirt,” he said at the press conference.
Meanwhile, the FIGC is evaluating whether to proceed with substitute calls or wait for the evolution of individual situations. One thing is certain: the team’s morality is not the best and the preparation for the next international games begins in the sign of instability.
Public opinion is divided. Some fans solidarize with Acerbi and the other Inter players, recognizing the sports trauma lived. Others, however, accuse them of lack of professionalism, claiming that representing the national team should never depend on the outcome of a single match, however painful.
The fracture between the Inter group and the national team could open worrying scenarios in view of Euro 2028. It will be the task of Spalletti, once again, reappear the environment and restore enthusiasm to a group that, net of defeats, remains full of talented.
The question that hovers now among the blue fans is simple but crucial: will Italy be able to get up again this time too?
