In a bold and controversial statement published on its X (formerly Twitter) platform, multimillionaire businessman Elon Musk asked for a global boycott of sporting events that allow biologically male athletes to compete in female divisions. He also proposed radical reforms, including hard sanctions for what he described as “gender -based traps” in sports.

“If we allow biological men to dominate female competitions, we are not only erasing the record, we are erasing women,” Musk wrote in a publication that quickly went viral. This is not inclusion. It is fraud.
Musk’s comments occur in the midst of a growing international debate around gender identity in sports, particularly in athletics, swimming and combat sports. While some organizations have implemented testosterone thresholds or separate categories, Musk argues that these measures are not enough.

In a subsequent publication, he proposed “mass disqualifications, prohibitions for life and withdrawal of medals” for athletes and coaches that “intentionally violate the integrity of the female competition categories.”
Musk posture reactions have been polarized. His supporters praised him for “defending biological women” and challenging what they consider an unfair advantage. Critics, however, accused him of spreading transphobia and not understanding the complexities of gender identity and sports governance.
Outstanding LGBTQ+ defense groups condemned the comments, and an organization described Musk’s rhetoric as “dangerous and dehumanizing.” On the other hand, some defenders of women’s rights applauded change, saying that it would help preserve equity in women’s sports.

Sports organizations have not yet officially responded to Musk’s call to a boycott, but experts suggest that the issue is increasingly difficult to ignore, especially when one of the most influential voices in the world supports him.
As always, the direct and provocative language of Musk has caused a storm of debates, and its domino effects could soon achieve the policies of government agencies such as the International Olympic Committee and FIFA.
