Archaeologists Discover the Bronze Giant Ercole Mastai-Righetti Buried by Lightning for Thousands of Years
In August 1864, beneath Palazzo Pio in Rome, archaeologists made a remarkable discovery—an enormous gilded bronze statue of a young Hercules. The statue, now known as Ercole Mastai-Righetti, was found lying carefully placed in a horizontal position inside a pit surrounded by travertine slabs arranged like a small hut. Despite being buried for centuries, the statue was in relatively good condition. However, the mystery surrounding its intentional burial puzzled researchers for years.
Studies revealed that the statue was a Roman copy, dated between the late 1st century and the 3rd century AD, exhibiting classical stylistic features from the Antonine era. However, its head appeared disproportionately large, suggesting that it might have been replaced or restored after a fire or an earthquake. While these findings shed light on the statue’s artistic characteristics, the reason for its burial remained unclear—until the discovery of a crucial inscription.
A triangular stone, acting as a tympanum to the hut-like structure, bore the inscription “F. C. S.”. According to the archaeologist Carlo Pietrangeli, this abbreviation stands for “Fulgur Conditum Summanium”, which translates to “Here lies a lightning bolt of Summanus.” In ancient Roman religion, Summanus was a god associated with nocturnal thunderbolts. The presence of this inscription suggested that the statue had been struck by lightning, leading to its burial according to sacred rituals.
The Romans believed that places hit by lightning became “bidental” or “locus religiosus,” meaning they were transformed into sacred sites. Objects affected by lightning strikes were considered imbued with divine power and could not be moved. Instead, they had to be ritually buried on-site to appease the gods. This practice explains why such a colossal statue was deliberately placed in a specially prepared pit rather than being restored or reused.
Before being struck by lightning, the Ercole Mastai-Righetti statue originally adorned the scene of the Theatre of Pompey, one of Rome’s most famous theaters, constructed in 55 BC. The statue was likely positioned near an adjacent temple within the complex, serving as an important decorative and religious element. Its grand scale and artistic craftsmanship indicate that it was a significant masterpiece, possibly symbolizing the strength and divine protection of Hercules.
Today, the Ercole Mastai-Righetti stands as an incredible testament to both Roman artistry and religious beliefs. Its discovery provides valuable insight into ancient customs regarding lightning strikes and the deep spiritual significance attributed to natural phenomena. The statue, once lost beneath the streets of Rome, now resides in the Museo dei Conservatori, where it continues to amaze visitors with its majestic presence and fascinating history.
