A 7-year-old boy, who fights for a malignant brain tumor, had shared his last wish through the hospital: a phone call with his hero, Max Verstappen. What followed, exceeded all the expectations of his family, friends and the medical staff.
Verstappen reached the request through a foundation that fulfills the wishes of seriously ill children. In the first instance, the plan that Max would just video call to greet the boy, to give him an encouraging word and to express his support. But Verstappen decided not to leave it with a simple conversation.
To everyone’s surprise, the world champion personally appeared in the hospital. Instead of a short phone call, he walked into his Red Bull Racing team clothing, the boy’s room with a wide smile and a large bag full of gifts. It contained a signed racing wheel, an original Red Bull racet, and even a racing overall in child-format with his name on it.
The boy, visibly emotional, could not believe his eyes. “Is this real?” He asked softly while he hugged Verstappen. Max took extensive time to talk to him, take photos and even test a small remote -controlled racing car at the hospital corridor. The laughter and cheers that echoed through the department became not only the family, but also the staff present.
According to the boy’s mother, this moment was priceless. “My son has known pain and fear for months. Today I saw him shine again. That could not have been a doctor or medicine, but Max does.”
The hospital later shared that Verstappen had not invited media and that the meeting took place purely out of personal involvement. “He asked us not to give publicity before the moment had taken place. This was not about publicity for him, but about making a boy happy,” said a spokesperson.
