(PLO)- Arriving in Greenland, US Vice President JD Vance said that the island would be better off “under the security protection of the US instead of under the security protection of Denmark”.

During a visit to the US Pituffik Space Base in Greenland on March 28, US Vice President JD Vance said Denmark was not doing enough to protect the island, according to AFP news agency .

“Our message to Denmark is simple: You have not done a good job for the people of Greenland. You have not invested enough in the people of Greenland and in the security infrastructure of this beautiful and incredible land,” Vance said.

Greenland would be better off “under the security umbrella of the United States than under the security umbrella of Denmark,” Vance said.

The US Vice President also emphasized that the “statements” of the administration of US President Donald Trump were not aimed at the people of Greenland but “at the leadership in Denmark”, according to The Guardian .

“We think the people of Greenland are rational and good people, and we think we’ll be able to reach a Trump-style agreement that ensures the security of the territory and the United States,” Vance said.

At the White House the same day, President Trump reiterated his previous statement that the US needs Greenland for “world peace”.

“I think Greenland understands that the United States should have it. And if Denmark and the European Union (EU) don’t understand that, we have to explain it to them. We need Greenland. It’s very important for international security that we have Greenland,” Trump said.

Vice President Vance, Second Lady Julia Nesheiwat, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Senator Mike Lee arrived in Greenland on March 28. The visit was met with strong backlash from Denmark.

Greenland’s new Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen said Vice President Vance’s visit showed Washington had disrespected Greenland, according to The Guardian .
