In an unexpected turn within the Formula 1 world, Max Verstappen, three-time world champion and face of Red Bull Racing, has rejected a lucrative range of sponsorships from none other than Elon Musk. The Dutch driver refused to wear advertisements for Tesla, the leading electric car brand of Musk, on his racing suit – and his reason for this even left the usually pronounced billionaire speechless behind.
According to sources close to the Red Bull team, Elon Musk approached the Kamp van Verstappen with an extraordinary generous offer: a multi-year sponsorship agreement that is said to be tens of millions of euros. The plan was to show the Tesla logo prominently on the chest of Verstappen’s racing suit, as a symbol of innovation, speed and sustainability.
But to the surprise of many, Verstappen declined the proposal. In a closed press conference he would have said the following:
“I fully support technological progress and sustainability in motorsport, but I cannot promote a brand that I do not support one hundred percent in terms of vision and implementation. For me, racing is not only about money, but also about principles.”
What makes this statement so remarkable is that Verstappen consciously chooses not to be associated with Tesla, despite the global fame and Musk’s influence in both the tech and car world. Sources suggest that Verstappen questions the recent strategies of Tesla, including the scrapping of physical buttons in cars, the issue of Autopilot accidents and the company’s personnel policy.
According to insiders, Elon Musk would have been “stupidly beaten” due to the rejection. For someone who is used to doing companies and celebrities in line to be associated with Tesla, Verstappens refused as a rare setback.
The Formula 1 community responded divided. Some praised Verstappen for his integrity and independence, while others wondered if he thereby leaves an opportunity to further expand his influence outside the racing world.
