Max Verstappen and his girlfriend postpone their marriage – reason breaks hearts worldwide
In an unexpected turn, the Dutch Formula 1 Superster Max Verstappen has shocked his millions of fans all over the world by announcing that he and his girlfriend, model and influencer Kelly Piquet, postpone their planned wedding. The couple, who announced their engagement earlier this year, was originally to get married at the end of 2025 in a closed ceremony on the French Rivièra. But now the plans are temporarily gone.
During an exclusive interview with a Dutch sports channel after the Belgian Grand Prix, Verstappen shared the news with visibly mixed emotions. “Together we decided to postpone the wedding. It was not an easy choice, but at the moment it is just not the right moment,” he said.
The reason behind the delay is moving. Verstappen revealed that there are currently serious health problems playing within the Kelly Piquet family. “Kelly’s mother is seriously ill, and our priority now lies entirely with her family,” Max said frankly. “A marriage must be a moment of happiness and complete dedication, and at the moment we could not be there with our hearts.”
The driver, known for his calmness and sober attitude, showed his emotional side for the first time in a long time. “Kelly has my full support. This is not a matter of doubt or fight – we love each other very much. But some things in life go beyond everything,” he added.
As soon as the news became known, the statements of support from fans, fellow drivers and celebrities came in via social media. Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel, among others, showed their condolences. “Strength for you and Kelly, family is the most important thing,” wrote Hamilton on Instagram.
Red Bull Racing also published a short but powerful statement in which the team expressed their support to Max and Kelly, and fully respected their decision.
Although Verstappen is clearly affected by the situation, he indicated that this will not influence his focus on the world championship. “I stay professional. Racing is my work and my passion, but my heart is now also somewhere else. That doesn’t change my dedication on the track.”
Whether and when the marriage will take place, remains uncertain for now. But one thing is certain: Max and Kelly take the time they need – and with their loved ones.
