Tom Hanks, America’s beloved “everyman,” has officially declared he’s had enough. In a move that has left Hollywood and the nation stunned, the Oscar-winning actor announced he’s dropping all his recent Academy Award nominations and leaving the United States, citing deep disillusionment following Donald Trump’s reelection.

Hollywood star Tom Hanks is a legend and one of the most revered actors in the world. He stole the show and everyone’s hearts with his heartfelt performance in the 1994 classic Forrest Gump. He has an experience of more than four decades in acting, having started his career in 1980 with the film He Knows You’re Alone, and also voicing one of the characters in the classic animation film Toy Story. Given his incredible body of work, he happens to be a legend in all the rights. But he has made a shocking announcement that may leave his fans heartbroken.
Tom Hanks made a statement that has gone viral where he spoke about leaving his country, the U.S., as this wasn’t the America he wanted. Here’s what happened.
“This isn’t the America I wanted,” said Tom Hanks. That’s not all, he has also asked the Academy to withdraw all his Oscar nominations. The actor added, “I’ve played heroes, explorers, and even captains, but I can’t captain this sinking ship anymore.”
As per the website XYO, Hanks’ alarming decision comes post Donald Trump’s re-election as the American President.
The Academy reacted to Hanks’ statement and said, “Tom Hanks has always been a pillar of integrity in the entertainment industry. While we regret his decision, we respect his stance.”
Bollywood actor Jaaved Jaferi was the first to share his reaction on X. The actor tweeted- “One of my favourite actors stirred a hornet’s nest. More may arise, in other countries. Not all ‘democratic’ countries are as accepting towards independent opinions as US. Let’s see if this affects his work in Hollywood. Some powers that be are vindictive.”
One user wrote- “But our country has all spineless so called stars, who will go to any extreme to please netas.”
A second one said, “Why is political/electoral disappointment leads to despondency to an extent that people decide to leave the soil they were born in, grew up & worked hard to become what they are!”
A third commented- “Hollywood is a cartel. Real courage was to speak against the machine and support Trump. Musk showed real courage not Tom Hanks.”
The 1994 tearjerker was remade in Bollywood by Aamir Khan as Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022, a commercial failure.
Talking about why it flopped, Khan said in an interview, “It’s a film close to my heart. Advait, Kareena and the whole cast and crew worked hard and it didn’t do well. Two things happened, after a long time my film didn’t work, so family and friends would come home to ask me, ‘If I’m okay?”
The actor added, “I realised that I’m getting a lot of love after a flop. That was the funny side of it. The real side is, failure teaches you what really has gone wrong. It gives you an opportunity to understand what was your mistake in terms of communicating that story.”
