George Russell has been very critical of Max Verstappen, calling it a “nightmare”. He claimed that Verstappen took his place at Mercedes and that Red Bull ignored him.

The Formula 1 world has been shaken once again by a fierce statement from Mercedes driver George Russell, who has made no secret of his frustrations with Max Verstappen and his alleged influence on his career. In a recent interview, conducted in the run-up to the Austrian Grand Prix, Russell sharply criticized the four-time world champion and described the situation surrounding his own future at Mercedes as a “nightmare”. According to Russell, Verstappen would not only jeopardize his position at Mercedes, but Red Bull would also completely ignore him as a potential candidate for their team. The comments come at a time when the 2026 driver market is in full swing and tensions between the two drivers, who have shared a rivalry for years, are further increasing.

The controversy began when Russell suggested that Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was still in talks with Verstappen about a potential move to the team in 2026. Although Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, there have been whispers in the paddock about clauses that could offer him an early exit, particularly if Red Bull fail to meet his performance expectations. Russell, whose contract with Mercedes expires at the end of 2025, is feeling the heat from this speculation. He claimed that Verstappen has actively “taken over” his place at Mercedes due to Wolff’s continued interest, leaving Russell in an uncertain position. “It’s a nightmare to be in this situation,” Russell told Sky Sports. “I’m performing at my best but it seems like my future is being determined by factors beyond my control.”

The rivalry between Russell and Verstappen is not new. The two drivers have clashed on and off the track on numerous occasions. One notable incident occurred at the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this season, where Verstappen controversially collided with Russell. The Dutchman was given a 10-second time penalty and three penalty points, putting him on the brink of a race ban. Russell called the move “unnecessary” and suggested that Verstappen sometimes damages his own Formula 1 legacy with such behavior. “I’ve been racing against him since 2011,” Russell said. “I know exactly what he’s like when he’s not at the front. It’s win or crash.”

In addition to his criticism of Verstappen, Russell also took aim at Red Bull. He claimed that the Milton Keynes-based team is completely ignoring him as a potential candidate for a seat, despite his strong performances this season. With four podiums and a win in Canada, Russell has proven to be one of the top talents on the grid. However, Red Bull appear to be uninterested, which Russell believes is due to their focus on Verstappen. “I have spoken to Red Bull, but it was more informal,” he said. “They only have eyes for Max, and that is their right, but I feel like I am not even being considered.”

The situation is further complicated by the emergence of Mercedes junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who has impressed as Russell’s team-mate this season. Toto Wolff has made no secret of his admiration for Antonelli, fueling speculation over Russell’s future at the team. “Kimi and I work well together,” Russell said. “We get results, and I don’t see why Mercedes would change something that works.” Still, Wolff appears reluctant to offer Russell a new contract, possibly in the hope of signing Verstappen if Red Bull’s performance continues to falter.

Meanwhile, Verstappen has remained cool to the speculation within Red Bull. When asked about a possible move to Mercedes, he responded evasively: “I’m focused on driving and improving the car. What happens next year, we’ll see.” Red Bull team boss Christian Horner insisted that Verstappen remains the linchpin of the team, despite the RB21’s recent struggles. “Max is our leader, and we’re building the future around him,” Horner said.

The exchange between Russell and Verstappen adds a new layer of tension to an already drama-filled Formula 1 season. As the Austrian Grand Prix approaches, fans and pundits alike are keeping a close eye on the dynamic between these two drivers. Will Russell be able to retain his place at Mercedes, or will Verstappen once again cast a shadow over the Briton’s career? For now, the future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the rivalry between these two warring parties is far from over.
