The controversy began when Russell suggested that Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was still in talks with Verstappen about a potential move to the team in 2026. Although Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, there have been whispers in the paddock about clauses that could offer him an early exit, particularly if Red Bull fail to meet his performance expectations. Russell, whose contract with Mercedes expires at the end of 2025, is feeling the heat from this speculation.
