The Formula 1 world is again in turmoil after the tumultuous Grand Prix of Spain, where a collision between Max Verstappen and George Russell heated the mood. The FIA president has issued a strong message by hinting possible sanctions against Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, following accusations that Horner questioned the integrity of Mercedes driver George Russell after the incident. The controversy, which focuses on a punishment for Verstappen after his collision with Russell, has led to fierce discussions in and outside the Paddock, which increases the tensions between Red Bull and Mercedes.
During the final phase of the Spain Grand Prix on the Barcelona-catalunya circuit, a controversial collision took place between Verstappen and Russell. After a restart after a safety car, caused by a crash by Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, Russell Verstappen tried to catch up in bend 1. Verstappen, who rode hard tires-a strategic choice that was later described by Horner-left the track to keep his position. For fear of a punishment from the FIA because he had gained an advantage by getting off the track, Red Bull Verstappen ordered Russell back to give back the position. This led to frustration in the four -time world champion, who said via the on -board radio that he did not agree with the decision.
What followed was a time when the Formula 1 world shocked. In turn 5, Verstappen initially seemed to have to surrender his position to Russell, but in a sudden movement he gave gas and hit the side of Russell’s Mercedes. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner initially defended his driver, but later admitted that Verstappen had apologized to the team. Horners comments after the race, in which he suggested that Russell was possibly the culprit of the incident, received fierce criticism from the FIA. The president of the Motorsportbond, who is known for his commitment to Fair Play and Respect in sport, would have expressed his dissatisfaction with Horners Insinuations. The accusations are seen as an attempt to shift the debt and harm Russell’s reputation, which the FIA considers unacceptable in a sport that is of paramount importance.
The FIA president is said to have conducted an investigation into the statements of Horner, with possible disciplinary measures in the offing. These could vary from an official warning to a fine or even a temporary suspension, depending on the findings of the investigation. The development comes at a time when Horner is already under pressure because of the poor performance of Red Bull in the constructors’ championship, where the team has dropped to fourth place after McLarens dominant 1-2 finish in Spain.
The situation is also precarious for Verstappen. With the Grands Prix of Canada and Austria in the offing, he must be extremely careful to prevent further penalty points. Two penalty points from an earlier incident with Lando Norris will be withdrawn on 30 June, but until then he will balance on the edge of a suspension. Horner himself has called for faster decisions of the competition management to prevent such controversies in the future, but his comments about Russell have caught the attention of the FIA.
The Formula 1 community is now eagerly waiting for Horner and Red Bull’s response to the FIA warning. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has further fueled the situation by suggesting that Verstappens actions are a reflection of his competitive nature, but that such incidents are not good for sport.
