Max Verstappen, the current world champion of Formula 1, has generated a strong controversy by publicly declaring that he will not participate in any activity related to the month of pride that is celebrated in June. During a press conference prior to a Grand Prix, the Dutch pilot said that he does not consider it necessary to commemorate what he called “Woke ideologies”, and said that each individual must be respected equally, without the need to “impose labels.”

These statements quickly became viral and awakened reactions both in favor and against. In social networks, thousands of users expressed their disappointment, arguing that the month of pride is not about imposing ideologies, but about making visible and supporting a historically discriminated community. These words have been received with skepticism by activists and organizations that fight for human rights, who insist that Formula 1, as a global spectacle, has a social responsibility, especially considering its media scope and influence on young people around the world. According to them, remaining neutral in the face of injustice can also be a form of complicity.

It should be remembered that Formula 1 has promoted campaigns for inclusion in recent years, such as the motto “We Race As One”, and has supported symbolic gestures such as the colors of the rainbow in the cars or uniforms during the month of June. With the Verstappen position, the debate about to what extent the athletes must or may not get involved in social causes.
