Valtteri Bottas becomes Red Bull’s second driver. A great news that surprised the entire F1

After a surprising announcement that shocked the Formula 1 driver’s warehouse, Valtteri Bottas was confirmed as the second driver of Red Bull Racing for the 2026 season in addition to four-time world champion Max Verstappen. The announcement of June 5, 2025 marks a significant change in the driver’s market: the 35-year-old Finn, currently replacement driver of Mercedes, returns to the race after a year of absence. This step, which surprised many in Formula 1, took place at a time when Red Bull was looking for an experienced driver as a partner for Verstappen’s tireless striving for his fifth world championship title after the 2025 season was shaped in second place.

Bottas, ten-time Grand Prix winner, brings a great wealth of experience to Red Bull. He drove from 2017 to 2021 for Mercedes, where he made a significant contribution to winning five consecutive world of constructors. His time at Sauber ended in 2024, as the team decided before moving to Audi in 2026 for a completely new line -up. Since he no longer had a driver for 2025, Bottas accepted a backup role at Mercedes and at the same time acted as a replacement for McLaren and Williams due to the engine delivery contracts. Despite his absence from the starting place, Bottas has openly expressed his wish to return to racing, and his recent comments on his “availability” for Red Bull triggered speculation that led to this groundbreaking change.

The decision to sign Bottas fell after a difficult year for Red Bull’s second driver’s post. Yuki Tsunoda, who was promoted to the A team next to Verstappen after Liam Lawson’s difficulties in early 2025, could not keep up with the pace of the Dutch, which caused Red Bull to rethink his squad. Bottas, known for his reliability and his ability to score points, proved to be an unexpected but logical choice. However, the change was not without challenges. Bottas himself granted some resistance within the Red Bull organization, in particular on the part of the senior motorsport consultant Helmut Marko, who reported reports due to an incident at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Nevertheless, team boss Christian Horner and Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff urged Bottas and emphasized his experience and calm as an advantage for the stabilization of the team’s championship campaign.

The announcement triggered a broad debate in the Formula 1 community. Many expected Red Bull to make promotions within his young program, with drivers such as Racing Bulls-Imitator Isack Hadjar considered favorites for 2026. Bottas ’obligation marks a departure from Red Bull’s traditional youth orientation and signals a strategic realignment towards more experience to counteract the growing threat from McLaren, which Red Bull 2025 overtook two with five wins compared to Verstappen. The Finn’s track record, including his ability to support a teammate in the championship fight, makes him the ideal candidate, although some doubt his adaptability to Red Bull’s high -pressure environment.

Bottas ’return to Formula 1 also has an impact on his career. After expressing interest in other teams, including Cadillac and Alpine’s new F1 project, Bottas is now faced with the challenge of driving alongside Verstappen, which is considered one of the toughest competitors in sport. His role at Red Bull will probably concentrate on Constance and teamwork. He will support Verstappen’s title fight and at the same time contribute to the constructor evaluation, in which Red Bull has difficulty keeping up with McLaren and Ferrari. Bottas ’experience with the Mercedes engine, which Red Bull will also use under the new regulations in 2026, could give him a technical advantage.

The reactions of fans and experts were mixed. Some see Bottas ’obligation as a pragmatic move to strengthen Red Bull’s championship hopes, others see it a missed opportunity to promote young talents like Hadjar or Lawson. Social media posts over X reflect the surprise. Many praise Bottas ’perseverance to secure a top position despite doubts about his F1 future. His relaxed personality and his adventures off the racetrack, including his motorcycle and car collection, made the Finn popular with fans, who are now looking forward to his appearance in Red Bull’s colors.

While the 2025 season is up to its climax and, after his controversial collision with George Russell in Spain, is struggling to avoid a race ban, Bottas’s arrival signals Red Bull’s intention to reorganize itself and take the lead in 2026. The return of the Finn to a racing seat underlines its determination and the Formula 1 world will observe closely whether he has grown to be a member of being in one of the best-known teams of sport.
