Xabi Alonso returns to Madrid with a 4-3-3 masterplan, demanding fire and grit from his forwards or leaving them behind.

Xabi Alonso has revealed his tactical plans as he prepares to take charge of Real Madrid from June 2. After successfully leading Bayer Leverkusen to an historic Bundesliga title using a three-centre-back system, Alonso intends to shift Real Madrid’s style towards a 4-3-3 formation as his starting point, according to MARCA.

Despite the success with five defenders in Germany, sources at Valdebebas believe the current Real Madrid squad is not suited for three centre-backs, especially with Militao, Rudiger, and Alaba still recovering from injuries. For the upcoming Club World Cup, Alonso currently counts on Asencio and Huijsen as the only fully fit centre-backs, with Vallejo no longer part of the squad. Backup options include Jacobo Ramon and Aguado, alongside midfielder Tchouameni, who Alonso wants to see playing a key role in midfield.

The Club World Cup may also serve as a testing ground for some of the young defenders from the academy, while the fitness of Rudiger and Alaba will be closely monitored. Though not an immediate priority, there remains a possibility of a new defensive signing given the uncertainties in that position.

Alonso has emphasised the importance of collective defensive work, particularly from his front three. The coach plans to demand full commitment from attackers, noting that previous lapses in defensive effort contributed to Real Madrid’s inconsistent performances this season.

One of Alonso’s first conversations with the squad will be with star forward Vinicius Jr, focusing on balancing his offensive talent with greater defensive responsibility.

To prepare thoroughly, Alonso’s analyst Benat Labaien has been present at recent Real Madrid matches, studying the team’s tactics, behaviour, and mindset. Defensive discipline will be a key pillar of Alonso’s approach as he embarks on his new chapter at the helm of the Spanish giants.
