VP Vance Slams Ilhan Omar After Old Clip Warning About ‘Radicalized White Men’ Sparks Uproar

A resurfaced video clip of Representative Ilhan Omar has reignited political tensions in Washington and beyond, drawing sharp criticism from Republican leaders, including Vice President JD Vance. The video, taken from a 2018 interview with Al-Jazeera, features Omar discussing domestic terrorism in the United States, during which she said that Americans should be “more fearful of white men” due to their involvement in a majority of extremist-related killings. In the clip, Omar stated, “I would say our country should be more fearful of white men across our country, because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country.” She continued by suggesting that if fear were the basis for domestic policy, “we should be profiling, monitoring, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men.”

The remarks, though nearly eight years old, have resurfaced through conservative social media accounts including those of Laura Loomer and Libs of TikTok. The re-posted clips quickly gained traction, accumulating millions of views and sparking a wave of backlash from right-leaning figures across the political spectrum.

Vice President JD Vance, who has emerged as a leading conservative voice in the current administration, responded strongly on X (formerly Twitter). “This isn’t just sick; it’s actually genocidal language,” he wrote. “What a disgrace this person is.” His comments were echoed by Senator Mike Lee, who declared Omar’s statement to be “blatant racism,” while Representative Tom Emmer, a fellow Minnesotan, posted, “@IlhanMN never ceases to be an embarrassment for Minnesota.”

Conservative influencers were quick to amplify the sentiment, labeling Omar’s remarks as anti-American, racist, and inflammatory. Paul Szypula, a conservative commentator, declared Omar “the most anti-American member of Congress,” reflecting a widespread perception among some on the right that Omar’s rhetoric consistently challenges national unity.

Omar, in response, defended her past comments by pointing to data from the Anti-Defamation League, which stated that white supremacists were responsible for 78 percent of extremist-related murders in the United States at the time. “In this nearly 8yr old clip, I am referring to the rise of white nationalism in an annual report issued by the Anti-Defamation League,” she wrote on X. “PS you should look up what ‘genocidal’ actually means when you’re actively supporting a genocide taking place in Gaza.”

Her rebuttal referenced the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, where recent military actions by Israel have drawn criticism from progressives, including Omar. She has been a vocal opponent of what she and others in her caucus consider disproportionate Israeli military responses and humanitarian concerns in Palestinian territories. That stance, along with previous controversial statements, has led to accusations of anti-Semitism—some from members of her own party.

Adding to the controversy, first-term Texas Congressman Brandon Gill posted a separate clip showing Omar allegedly advising Somali immigrants, possibly undocumented, on how to handle interactions with federal immigration officials. Gill’s post accused Omar of enabling illegal immigration and called for her deportation. “America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia,” he wrote. Other users and political commentators echoed his sentiment, calling for an investigation into her immigration history and possible legal action.

Critics argue that such statements not only overstep the bounds of political discourse but also reinforce xenophobic and Islamophobic tropes. Omar, who arrived in the United States as a Somali refugee and later became one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress, has long been the subject of right-wing scrutiny. Though allegations of immigration fraud have circulated for years, no concrete evidence has ever been produced to substantiate these claims.

As the debate over the resurfaced clip continues to unfold, it underscores the deepening political polarization in the United States. The reaction to Omar’s past comments, and the broader conversation surrounding national security, racism, and freedom of speech, reflects a society still struggling to define the limits of acceptable discourse in an increasingly diverse and divided country.

The timing of the clip’s resurgence also raises questions about the role of social media in shaping public narratives. In an era where content can be endlessly circulated and reinterpreted, the consequences of past statements—however old—remain potent, particularly for public figures.

As for Representative Omar, the controversy is unlikely to abate anytime soon. Whether she will face formal censure, renewed calls for expulsion, or a broader political reckoning remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the divide over her words speaks to larger battles being waged over identity, ideology, and the soul of American democracy.
