Delta Passenger Claims Plane Ceiling Panel Fell Off and ‘Hit’ Fellow Traveler in the Head

A traveler took to Reddit to share images of a fallen ceiling panel aboard Flight 1278 from Santa Ana, Calif., en route to Atlanta
A passenger aboard a recent Delta flight is claiming a ceiling panel fell off and allegedly hit another traveler in the head.
The passenger took to the Delta Reddit forum on Monday, April 14, to share images of an open ceiling panel with an image of the panel lying on the aircraft floor.
The incident occurred that same day aboard Delta Flight 1278 from Santa Ana, Calif., en route to Atlanta. The ceiling panel fell as the Boeing 757 aircraft was taxing into Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, allegedly hitting a passenger in the head.
“Delta has been in touch with our customer to express our apologies for this rare occurrence,” a Delta representative said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “Our cabin maintenance teams quickly addressed the issue.”
The passenger was met by an emergency medical technician who treated their wound before proceeding onto their connecting flight in Atlanta, per the airline.
While the situation is anything but a laughing matter, the commenters of the shared Reddit post had many jokes about the incident. “Complimentary concussion,” wrote one Redditor.
“Delta must be using the same glue they’re using on the Cybertrucks,” wrote another, referencing the Tesla-owned vehicle, which has been recalled and considered a “road hazard” by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
One comment even mentioned a similar incident occurring on another Delta flight that same day from a separate post, where passengers can be seen holding up a falling ceiling panel above their heads with their fingertips.
In a statement regarding this incident, a Delta representative noted that the flight continued with about a two-hour delay on another aircraft. “Delta thanks our customers for their patience and cooperation. We apologize for the delay in their travels,” stated the representative.
The post came just a couple of days after a Delta flight was redirected from its destination due to weather conditions, forcing passengers to remain aboard their flight overnight.
According to a report by PEOPLE, Flight 1828 from Cabo San Lucas and Flight 599 from Mexico City to Atlanta ultimately touched down in Montgomery Regional Airport in Montgomery. However, because the Alabama airport is not set up to facilitate international travelers, the nearly 300 passengers remained on the tarmac.
In a statement to the outlet, a Delta spokesperson wrote, “We sincerely apologize to our customers for this experience. We fell short of how we aspire to serve and care for our customers amid thunderstorms in the Southeast U.S. Thursday evening.”
The statement continued, “We are reaching out to each customer with a full refund of their booking.”
