Joe Biden speaks out about President Donald Trump for the first time since leaving office

Former President Joe Biden said on April 15 that Donald Trump’s tax cuts would harm social security programs.

Former President Joe Biden also criticized Republican efforts to extend the 2017 tax cuts (which were passed during Donald Trump’s first term).

In his first speech since leaving the White House in January, former President Joe Biden defended the Social Security Administration (SSA), speaking out as the Trump administration slashed staff and closed some of the agency’s offices.

Biden’s speech in Chicago to disability rights advocates marked a major return to American politics as President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, run by tech billionaire Elon Musk, has drastically cut the federal workforce. Biden said the Trump administration had “taken action” against the agency.

“This new administration has done so much damage,” Mr. Biden said. He called Social Security “more than a government program.”

The Social Security Administration (SSA) pays $ 1.4 trillion in benefits each year to 73 million seniors and people with disabilities in the United States. During his election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly pledged not to touch social security benefits.

According to Al Jazeera, Mr. Biden warned that Republicans could only continue tax cuts by “increasing the budget deficit” and “taking money from elsewhere.”

Mr. Biden ended his speech with a call for unity, a key message of his 2020 presidential campaign.

“This cannot go on. The country has never been so divided,” he said.
