The US responded to China’s tariffs to 125%

White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt claimed that President Donald Trump could “respond strongly” by China’s retaliation for tariffs.

“President Donald Trump has clearly shown that when the United States was attacked, he would respond strongly. If China continued to retaliate, it would not be beneficial for them,” White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt said at the press conference on April 11 according to Washington.

Despite the escalating trade tensions between the US and China, Leavitt confirmed that President Trump was “ready to reach an agreement with Beijing” and said more than 75 countries contacted the White House head to express their desire to solve trade issues.

“President Donald Trump’s phone rings continuously because negotiations as well as reciprocal tax -related agreements. Our trading partners have made it clear that they need America. They need our market, they need our consumer forces,” the White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt added.

Before that, according toXinhua, in a statement on April 11, the tariff committee of the China Institute’s Council announced that Beijing would increase additional taxes on goods imported from the US to 125%. This tax starts to take effect from April 12.

The Chinese Tariff Commission said that Washington’s imposition of unusually high tariffs on Beijing goods was “seriously violating international trade rules, contrary to basic and common economic laws and this was an act of bullying and forcing unilaterally”.

According to this committee, even if the US continues to apply higher tariffs, it is no longer economically significant and “will become a joke in world economic history”.

“With the current tariffs, US goods exported to China are not likely to be accepted by the market. China will not pay attention if the US continues to impose tariffs on Chinese goods exported to the US,” the Chinese Tariff Committee said.
